Ideas for Application:

  • Transferring documents from own computer to iPad
  • Using a shared dropbox (i.e. a class dropbox) for students to submit assignments or notes from the iPad
  • Using a shared dropbox to share documents with the students

(from iTunes)
Dropbox is the easiest way to sync and share your files online and across computers.
App features:

  • View photos, videos, documents, and presentations in your Dropbox on the go.
  • Save photos and videos taken with your iPhone's camera to your Dropbox, including HD videos on your iPhone 4!
  • Share and send files via email, or copy and paste links to share with another app.
  • Export Dropbox files to other iPhone and iPad apps.
  • "Favorite" files to download them for fast, offline viewing.
  • Swipe your way through photo galleries

  • Available on many platforms: iPod, iPad, Android, Mac, PC
  • Easy to learn/use
  • Faster way to get docs to iPad than e-mail sharing or iTunes file transfer
  • Ability to search documents by name or recently uploaded, so even if you are disorganized in your file placement, it is still fast to find what you are looking for.

  • If you are sharing lots of pictures or videos, 2GB might not be enough sharing space
  • Seems stable, but there was an extended outage of the service a few weeks ago
  • Takes a while to get students used to using it

Helpful Tips:

If you have administrator privileges on your PC or Mac destop/laptop, install the Dropbox client. It makes it so that you don't even have to go to the Dropbox website to upload a document from your computer - just drag & drop it into the Dropbox folder and Dropbox does the rest. However, this many not work for school computers as most teachers & students do not have the ability to install programs.

Additional Comments:

Bottom line:

As Wired Magazine has written, Dropbox is "the iPad's de-facto file system." I've not found a more efficient or simpler way to get documents to my iPad. Highly recommended.
